The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers were ranked number one in the state and 18th in the country, according to a U.S. News & World Report ranking released earlier this week.

This is the 24th consecutive year the UMHS has been recognized nationally for its strong performance. Medical School Dean Marschall Runge, who is also the UMHS CEO, acknowledged the dedication from the physicians, nurses and staff.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of the leading hospitals in the nation,” Runge told UMHS News. “Our incredible team of physicians, nurses and staff are dedicated to excellent patient care, and we sincerely appreciate and recognize them for their commitment and hard work.”

U.S. News — which initially considered 4,667 hospitals nationwide — ranked based on the hospitals’ performances, with the heaviest weight on patient survival (37.5 percent). Other factors were reputation of specialists (27.5 percent), patient safety (5 percent) and other care-related indicators such as nurse staffing and patient volume.

In addition to nationally ranking for its overall performance, UMHS also ranked nationally in 12 adult specialties, such as ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat, and was rated “high performing” for nine adult procedures and conditions, such as lung cancer surgery and heart bypass surgery.

C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital also ranked nationally in eight pediatric specialties — including cardiology, heart surgery and nephrology — which was more than any other children’s hospitals in Michigan.
