This article is seriously poorly written. I expect more from the U-M student.
In all seriousness, Moosejaw's marketing scheme's have always been a little off the wall and in no way is this campaign more sexually driven than any of the others. Anyone who looks at this catalog and thinks that it's glorifying women prisoners knows nothing about marketing. It's meant to be funny and not the least bit thought provoking. Furthermore, shouldn't we be celebrating a successful local business instead of inciting some sort of protest? I agree, why are we being so sympathetic to the prisoners who've committed a crime? Yes, I agree that there is a huge problem within our prison systems and that we should do something about it as opposed to spending more tax payers dollars on it...but we're not going to solve that problem overnight and we're not going to solve it by asking Moosejaw to pull their catalog. Maybe someone will get use out of the word search?
Moosejaw should acknowledge its lapse in judgement and remove this catalog from stores. After reading this article, I went to their website to view the catalog. The letters to the warden are directly mocking prisoners and the daily struggles that they face.
Moosejaw should issue an apology to its consumers so that they can move on from this mistake. Wohlfeill's comment that offense was not the store's intent isn't helpful. Obviously, a store wouldn't intentionally offend customers. But saying that Moosejaw meant no harm does not absolve them; Moosejaw needs to actively apologize and admit their arguably large mistake. This would improve their brand image as hopefully consumers will be forgiving.
Helen, did you see the most recent South Park episode mocking the lifes of minorities. It was hilarious, and so is this marketing campaign by Moosejaw. Prisoners have daily struggles in their lives most certainly, but do they deserve compasion for the consequences that have as a result of their individual choices to break the law? Helen.....you know the answer is no. They made a decision, and for life the resulting consequences are theirs to enjoy. Moosejaw is not mocking the prisoners life directly, but mocking the outlandish way in which our society uses prison/jail life to make millions in TV shows, movies, and the media. You obviously do not get the humor in the complete disconnect between the marketing and what Moosejaw is. Just becuase you do not get it this is no reason to demand an apology. Go home and complain to someone else Helen.
The best part is all this talk about it, negative or positive, make the ad campaign a total success!! You are all fools. All this talk is perfect for the Js... Seriously, if you don't like it, don't talk about it...
This argument makes absolutely no sense. Negative press is not good. And if we lived in a world where people didn't talk about things they didn't like...
What comes after the "..." Helen? I am thinking something like...we would spend a lot less time complaining and more time doing things to actually help someone.
The article is right on. It is the exploitation of women that no one seems to understand, especially the people that have posted here.
It's not like the females are wearing bikinis and doing some kind of provocative pose. In fact, the girls are mostly covered and the catalog has pages of a guy in the same jail setting doing pretty much the same kind of poses. It's actually very tastefully done.
Onemom, I did acquire one of their new catalogs, much like I said I would in the post below, and this catalog is great. Have you seen it, or just read the article? Perhaps you have just seen the one picture that is in their window which is the picture that seems to be referenced the most on blogs. Regardless, you miss the humor that the people on this blog do see. Onemom, don't let your kids go to public schools because they will be exposed to much worse material than this. I loved public school.
Can you please give some sort of example HOW this is exploitative of women? Or do you just have an opinion? I'm sure all of the models signed waivers agreeing to get their photos shot in a prison...
The people who has issues with this catalog have far too active of imaginations. Not a single prisoner was shown in the catalog, nor was there any rhetoric "making fun" of prisoners or their situation. The photos were taken in an abandoned wing of a LOCAL prison and the cells look rather clean. I think the people protesting this cause really should consider the fact that the prisoners they are 'protecting' did someone ILLEGAL to wind up in prison in the first place. My tax dollars already provide them everything they need, the least I can do is see some hot girls wearing North Face standing in a prison I helped pay for.
Wow… what a stupid article! You are right, because of the Moosejaw catalog I am for sure going to go get myself arrested

Just stopped by the Ann Arbor shop and picked up the new Jail themed catalog... I have one word: AWESOME!!!! I had to run to class but I am definately stopping back and picking up a new Danali jacket! Maybe I will see ya there later on Jeff!
I saw the email that is referenced in the article, and it is not a 'come and get me' sexual photo. It is a photo of a girl behind bars wearing a normal sized (for a young attractive lady) shirt and looking at the camera. This is one person that needs to get a life and learn how to laugh at the outlandish comedy that is dark humor. She must write multiple emails weekly to the producers of Family Guy and South Park. How did she even have time to write in response to this advertising? Busy, busy, busy little bee.
Chicks behind bars - awesome!
Anonymous....I think I love you. I am going to get the catalog today. I hope that it has that maze thing in it.
