I see that it's not enough to oppose the Catholic Church; now, anyone who is a member of that church should just shut up.

I see.

The First Amendment for Thee but not for Me.

I love liberals. They are so sure of their self-righteousness.

catholicism , islam and evangelical christianity are examples of how religions competing for exactly the same turf...allegience, forced or otherwise, of pretty much everyone... inevitably wind up at each others throats, much as popular myth/entertainment demonizes those creatures most like ourselves ( werewolves, giant apes, etc)

the bitterest of ironies is that historically all the above diss jews even more ( while freely plagiarizing from that far older parent faith), when that faith has no expansionist agenda whatsoever, beyond a legitimate historical claim to a sliver of real estate in the middle east.

"That a faculty member at the University wrote this is beyond depressing."

That's funny, because certain religious and political views are not one of the criteria for employment in U of M's chemistry department ... yet. Perhaps some sort of questionnaire regarding this topic can be added to university job applications? That way our enlightened unviersity can start hiring only scientific faculty whose personal opinions are in lockstep with those of the prevailing liberal zeitgeist.

Who is being the bigot in this situation? Once again, the 'tolerance' of the left reveals itself to be nothing but a sham.

First of all...it was a Viewpoint in light of the recent call to excessively misogynistic Anglicans to return to Catholicism. It wasn't an overarching debate on the soundness or worth of major world religions. The absence of discussion on Islam is irrelevant.

Second...the Catholic church lead by its (infallible?) Pope change interpretation of the big book to mesh with the times. If the book's interpretation changes over time...it's understandably difficult to "keep the faith" in the institution doing the interpreting.

Anyone who IS Catholic should not be terrified of criticism, but should listen with openness and see if that criticism applies. They also have the right (some would say obligation) to turn a critical eye to it themselves.

Anyone who IS NOT has every right to state their opinion and criticize until the cows come home. Catholicism is, by today's social standards, bigoted against women and against homosexuals. If a certain institution wants to have those views, they are free to do so. They should not be free to block legislation that grants equal protection under the law, and they should not be receiving tax breaks from the government of a secular nation. Especially since some of that "tax free" money goes to such deplorable programs as telling Africans that condoms cause HIV infection.

elizabeth ...the linkage of ratzingerian ( and mel gibsonian ) catholicism with militant islam and other proselytizing " our way or hell" religions is EXACTLY the point...

a pox on all the houses of those who butt into others' lives based not 0n their own legitimate survival needs but on unproveable and counter factual dogmas.

That a faculty member at the University wrote this is beyond depressing.

I have a special message for people like Wm. Butler: Don't like the theology and teaching of the Catholic Church? Then don't be Catholic.

As far as I know, the Roman Catholic Church does not permit its parishoners to invent their own personal theology; instead, parishoners are to obey and believe the teachings of the Church & magisterium.

While it might be nice to pick and chose from the smorgasbord of faith, the Catholic Church is not the place for a theological gourmet.

And I say this not as a Catholic - I am most certainly not a Catholic. I just understand that to be a Catholic one must believe and admit to certain inconvenient things.

steve --you are correct as to the nature of the catholic ( or indeed any organized , strongly hierarchical) church/religion...BUT your "if you dont like it dont join" thing doesnt cut it when the religion actively and effectively lobbies for misguided policies harmful to others ( e.g mucking around in others' reproductive lives in an age of runaway overpopulation and child abuse; and in the demonization of all of our gay friends and relatives...including catholics themselves)..

then non catholics absolutely have a right to weigh in.

other anon...you forgot the barriers to needed stem cell research thrown up by the catholic church
