Isn't it quite obvious by now. Ricky's days are numbered.

True Blue fans. See the link below for a really good (and lengthy) analysis of why our team has been struggling so much the last couple of years. Like it or not, our A.D. decided a radical change was in order for our football program. The perfect storm is now hitting us for the next couple of years with the combination of this change, a failure of our previous coaching staff to recruit in several key positions/areas on the defensive side of the ball before he left, and the natural attrition of players that happened because of this radical offensive philosophy change.

I have been fuming mad the last couple of weeks watching the play of our football team. But, after reading this article, I can really appreciate how far behind we are of other top teams in the area of depth and experience. You cannot coach experience. It will take a couple of years to recruit our way out of this situation. Coach Rich has some responsibility for what is going on with the team now, but our A.D. and Coach Carr also share the responsibility equally for the current state of the program.

So no matter how hard it is for us on game day, we really need to be patience.

NOTE: We really need to go to any bowl game this year, so the young guys get another 6 weeks of experience and practice together. So, GO BLUE against Purdue.....!!!

"It does not matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up. "
— Vince Lombardi, football coach

For the anonymous '74 alum who stated that Bo's hiring wasn't all that popular at first, that may or may not be true, but his record that first year was pretty good, culminating in an upset of a 1969 Ohio State team that was considered at the time by some to possibly be the best team ever in college football. Michigan lost the previous year to an undefeated OSU national championship team 50-14. Overall, the team was 8-3, winning a Big Ten championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl. In 1970, Michigan was undefeated before losing at Columbus. Both years. U-M finshed in the top 10 in the polls. Whatever popularity issues Bo may or may not have had at the beginning were disposed of quickly. More to the point, Bo was able to achieve success with the talent he had to work with and did not rely upon "the cupboard was bare when I got here" as an excuse for failure.

The "cupboard is bare" is not an excuse. It is what it is. But which would you think have better success, seasoned juniors and seniors who are familiar with a system already in place OR un-tested freshmen and sophomores who have walk-ons at key positions like quarter-back, wide recievers, safeties anf defensive ends. Threet could not hit his personnel when they were WIDE OPEN! Michigan basically had no quarterbacks last year.

You say there should be "no difference". Give me a break! You obviously don't understand that most freshmen get redshirted their first year, and it is usually upperclassmen playing. RR had 11 first year freshmen playing last year.

They will get there, but some fans have more patience than others.

UM Fan

Bo took over a program that was already in place. Even though "he worked with what he had", the talent was there for Bo, it was not for RR who was installing a new offense. As I said before, the old Michigan run offense, (2 runs, 1 pass) was pretty predicatable, and a little boring. New faster young talent is changing the landscape of offensive schemes. Why try to stuff it up the middle against big defensive linemen when you can just as easily move around them, Even the pro teams, Miami Dophins are using the wildcat offense, version of the spread without a quarterback, and they just decimated their opponent a couple weeks ago.

You are just limiting your offense if all the QB does is handoff or pass. Look what Oregon and Appalachia State did to Michigan a couple years ago. Or did you forget Carr was coach at that time also, not Rodiguez. Don't blame him for that fiasco. Michigan was going down hill before Rodriguez got there. He just has the unfortunate job of rebuilding with a decimated team. Give it time. I expected a couple years of "growing pains".

UM Fan

Hey Rich Rod. I hope you'll read this. I know that you're rebuilding and that it is a "work in progress". But we need a National Championship Team by fall of 2011, because Dec 21, 2012 just doesn't cut it.

UM Fan!

I think people forget also that Michigan fans did not like Bo Schembechler at first also. Did he have a perfect first season at Michigan? No but he had talented players already well-versed in the system, something that Rodriguez did not have the luxury of having.

Michigan's first drive against Penn State is what we should be looking for CONSISTENTLY. But that's where we need to get to. Give them time. This is team is much better than last year but still needs experience and consistency. I look for Forcier to start next year, Devin Gardner to be a backup QB and Denard (Shoelace) Robinson to be scatback or wide receiver. Robinson has the speed to get open and would be hard to cover, so why leave him at QB?

Wolverine ('74)

When Bill Martin hired Rodriguez, it was a paradigm shift for Michigan. From now on, we will play the same game as other big time football schools--hiring a new, big name coach for bigger and bigger money every 5 years or so. Each new coach will bring in his own completely new staff, demand millions in new facilities, and we will all be forced to pay through the nose as we sit through 2-3 years of "rebuilding."

Is it too late to go back to the system of hiring a "Michigan man" from within? Probably. I don't know about you, but I miss the old days (of just a few years ago) when a 9-4 season was a disappointment. Sure, in a couple more years we may have a winning season again, but in the meantime, I don't know if I'm willing to pay thousands in seat donations and ticket costs to watch UM beat up on hapless underdogs and lose to everyone else. If I do decide to stick it out, what will happen when this winning season finally comes? RR will probably start shopping for a new contract and we'll either have to pony up, or lose him to the highest bidder and start this whole thing all over again.

Rich needs time to build this program with his players. There is too much criticism right now considering that a very solid majority of his footballers are freshmen and sophomores. People need to relax. michigan will be back and these years will soon be forgotten. Let Rich do his job and the benefits will follow in time.

Expectations are way too high for this team at this stage. Rodriguez is an excellent coach and recruiter and he will have his players within two years (Gardner is the next Pat White by the way) and Michigan will be a thorn in OSU's side and things will be back to normal. GIVE IT TIME! We're talking about a complete upheaval of a traditional offense.

It requires a new set of players based on SPEED and an understanding of a complex system that we have seen does not take a mere year to perfect. Everything else will follow. Look at the Oregon/USC game....Michigan's offense will look like Oregon's. People have to be patient and support our coach. If we exile him now, we'll have to start all over again which will result in even more disappointment for years to come.

Colin Cowherd, who absolutely RIPPED on Michigan football a few years ago, feels that Rich Rodriguez has a great future in Ann Arbor and that a national title can be achieved within five years.

Greatness takes time. Rod built west virginia and tulane into repsectable programs and he will do the same here. We cannot leave him on an island of criticism that began when Carr retired. Patience is a virtue and we could learn to have some right now. Basketball is almost here, anyway.

Last year's excuse was the first year under RR is bad, BUT WAIT UNTIL THE SECOND YEAR. The second year is here and it SUCKS! And now you are advocating for ANOTHER freshman to start at quarterback?!?!? In order for this team to gain experience, you can't constantly switch players with younger players. If this system is so stinking difficult to find the right players to run the offense, THEN DITCH IT!!!!!!! I'd rather have an average scheme with good players (and we have good players with bad coaches) than have a great scheme that only a precious few can run (what happens when we get that right guy and he gets hurt, we're back in the same situation.

As far as Colin Cowherd goes, he's an idiot. He would badmouth an 8-4 team and praise a 3-9 Michigan in the name of "It will get better." Guess what, it can barely get worse.

30+ years of bowl games and RR will have 2 straight years without 1!!!!!

Heck, I can run this program into the ground for $1million per year...

First off, Gardner will be redshirted so he'll learn the system not to mention he is just a tremedously better athlete that Force. The whole team will have another year of experience and we'll get better. Our record may not show it because next year will be tough (away games at ND, PSU and osu) but the improvement will be there. We saw it the first half of the season; our players still need to develop as men because it is obvious they are inexperiemced, but talented. It takes patience it really does.

The talent on this team is immense and within two years at the most, michigan will be back where it was. fans like you are way too impatient and ignorant of the fact that all great coaches had a rough couple years to start but build respectable programs. I like where this program could go. People just need to be patient. there isn't a single program Rod hasn't failed in, and michigan will be no different. He was screwed to begin with because no one is supporting him and I feel that this lack of faith could have disastrous cosequences for MICH. Relax. It sucks but like you said, it can only get better

Lloyd Carr was a great coach. Rich Rod is not at the Big Ten level, therefore he will continue to fail.

i'm telling you being from wv, rr makes me sick, however i'd take him back today if you give him his four years you will be playing for a national championship every year after that, he is a winner and will own the big ten!!!! as bad as i hate to say it is the truth wait and see!!!

I think people have to remember that this is still a very young team. Also I think Forcier is not as sharp as he was in the first three games before he got hurt. He stepped into his passes earlier, but now he seems to be standing straight up, throwing floaters. I sense this is because he has been hurt and is tentative in his throwing. If you noticed against Notre Dame, he was on target WHILE HE WAS RUNNING! Not now. Maybe in-experience or being hurt, but it has to be corrected.

Defense is suspect but you can't expect them to play the whole game when the offense is not producing. Three and out on offense will get tire your defense and give up easy plays. Michigan was still in the game with MSU and Iowa. It could be a different record if things went UM's way. I also think the players are in "HURRY UP" mode, which also leads to a lot of mistakes and fumbles for young teams as they are not used to the faster pace. UM is on the right track, they just need to get more depth, experience and used to this fast pace offense. Play looser also like RR says.

Did you guys think they would actually go 12-0 this season after practically having no experienced players last year?

One thing I did not understand though, if you are a spread offense, why whould you try to stick it up the middle four times in a row against Illinois? The offense is better at mis-direction plays.... use it!!!

Wolverine ('74)

Hey UM Football Fans,

Aren’t you glad you paid $2 million for “Rich Frad-riguez?”

3-10 in 13 games!

Again, aren’t you glad you paid $2 million for him!

WVU learn to look up records.... last i checked you guys play in the big east...enough said

I am originally from Illinois.............I am a true blue Illini fan. I see Mary Sue gave a vote of confidence for RR. Love it! Mary Sue............luv' ya'..............keep the guy forever. The rest of the Big Ten will luv' ya' also.

Y'all look pretty in pink.....maybe even mauve..........but keep ole' RR around so even lowly Illinois can blast y'all. We need more female Big Ten Prez's to achieve equity.

Luvin' every minute of it.

You're an Illini fan? And you're talking trash? I'm originally from Illinois. But I wouldn't send my retarded mule to U of I. Your school sucks, your sports suck, your fans suck, and my god does Chambana suck. Get a life and go find another school that is relevant to root for.

You idiots only come out once a year. By the way, we're not your rival dipshit.

I can’t for the life of me understand why people are defending Rodriguez, his decisions have been, at best, questionable and given the amount of money that is poured into that program student, alumni, and fans have the right to expect more. I have to guess those supporting him are not alumni of Michigan and yes it makes a difference. It is more than just who is on the field, it is how the team is actually executing the game and that is directly related to coaching. My only other comments is related to the person who said this(RR) is not rock bottom and points to the Gerald Ford era, I guess that means we have to go back 75 years to find anything comparable to the current situation we have.

Here's an idea: Make RR's pay contingent on winning games. If he wins a game, he gets paid for a game. If he loses, he loses.

Maybe that will instill some motivation into the team and coaching staff.

I might have seen a few more games than others and researched UM football history during my time in Ann Arbor (for a book). This ain't CLOSE to rock bottom (last season far more resembled that when you lose to freaking Toledo at home).
This year's problem is ALL about depth. When injuries occur, as has happened on the O-line especially, and you have a thin line of talent on defense (with a critical lack of size up front), these things happen.
Redemption is STILL possible in a couple of weeks and with two more wins, UM can go to a bowl gae which would be a major turnaround from last year's nine-loss season.
BTW, that was NOT the worst team in UM history. Check out 1934 when Gerald Ford was captain and someone named him as an All-American. THAT 1-8 season, with the lowest offensive output in history, was FAR worse.
Believe me, in two years, this will ALL be forgotten. Meanwhile, until they replace Crisler Arena, UM is NOT a basketball school. Go get the Campy Russells, Phil Hubbards, Rickey Greens, Glen Rices, Rumeal Robinsons, and other standouts on a cinsistent basis, then you can discuss dominance in that sport. Beat MSU before you think about basketball as a major force.

As a Georgia fan who became a WVU fan several years ago as well, I am well used to the complaints I hear from the Michigan fans now. As not reported by the media, most WVU fans who know football were happy to see RR go. He is stubborn as he sticks to something even though its not working, his playcalling is HORRID! (and yes he does call the plays), and he loses games he should win. WVU was always very strong in recruiting, and RR should have won a NC with the talent he had there. Pat White/Steve Slaton were the ONLY reasons he won all those games and considered for Michigan. Very poor assessment of him by Michigan that they couldnt see all the flaws. I tried to tell the Michigan fans I knew this as soon as he was hired.
Believe it or not, I still hope he does well there.

I am a long die hard Michigan fan. This year's team is horrible!!! Lets start at the coaches and work our way down to the players. The lack of effort and lack of focus has to be put on the coaching staff. If a player cant field a punt, then do not put him back their RR! The players have to do a better job tackling, and reading the ball when it is in the air. I think we only have one or two INT's all year. If it was not for Brandon Graham this team would be 1-6. I believe Greg Robinson should start packing his bags also. Michigan should have" Michigan Men" running the program, not running away from it! Lets go after Les Miles ( A Michigan Man) with everything we have so he can bring Michigan back to where it belongs! Lets get back to smash mouth football the way we have been doing it for the past 100 years. RR has not won a BIG GAME ever! His teams has never been in national title talk. Lets cut our loses and lets get Michigan Men running the Michigan program!!

Lets Go Blue!!!

This coaching staff is the worst and here are the states that I have been tracking to prove it:
-20 out of 21 games under RR Michigan has at least one turnover (the lone exception was Miami of Ohio in Game 2 in 2008). That's 95.24% folks. Even in the face of an overwhelming loss, Delaware State did not turnover the ball. Players turnover the ball, but coaches teach them not to. This consistency proves the coaches aren't doing their job.
-Michigan has turned the ball over 51 times under RR, a pathetic 2.43 times per game.
-Under RR, Michigan has only scored in the 3rd quarter 6 times, for a grand total of 48 points! That averages out to be less than a FG per game.
-Michigan has been shutout in the 2nd half 8 times. That's 38% of the time.
-Michigan has only scored on the opening drive of the second half ONCE in 21 games (a FG against Minnesote in 2008)!
-64.9% of Michigan's scoring under RR comes in the first half. 38.5% in the first quarter. The team catches their opponent off guard to start the game, but once the opponent adapts, the game is over. MICHIGAN, UNDER RR, NEVER ADAPTS, THE STATS PROVE IT!

AND DON'T GIVE ME THE LACK OF TALENT EXCUSE. According to Rivals.com, the worst rank a Michigan recruiting class has received in the last 5 seasons has been 13th, in 2006. RR inherited a red-shirt junior and senior classes last year that were ranked 6th and 5th, respectively. Unfortunately, he chased all the talent off the team when he arrived to get "his players". Hey, RR, if they play for Michigan, they are your players, regardless of who recruited them!

According to the NY Times, we pay this clown $2.5 million per year to coach. I hate to tell RR, that is supposed to be for a full 60 minutes each week. He must get caught up at half time counting his money and doesn't have time to help the players in the second half.

FIRE RR NOW AND ARREST HIM FOR FRAUD!

This is a great column. But I don't think Michigan is the worst team. It has played very well at times and it did beat Notre Dame and came close to beating Iowa. But it has a tendency to break down at times, on both offence and defence. In the Illinois game, the defence finally crumbled, but had played well up to a point.
I also think the coaching is poor, play selection questionable at times. If mostly running plays were called against Illinois, why not play Robinson, who is a better runner, for some series? Why does Forcier try to run so often? A mobile quarterback is very helpful, but he should use all weapons and not rely on himself mostly.
I think the coaches need to motivate the players effectively. There is no reason for so many turnovers.
There is no excuse for poor tackling, confusion in the field, etc.
I think the recruiting, especially in Michigan, also needs to improve. The current situation won't encourage potential recruits.
I feel that Michigan is a young team that could grow and improve. But it is not improving, but sliding. I think coach Rodriguez needs to make major adjustments in his approach.
I was at the university during 1956-1959 as a journalism student under the University of Michigan-University Press club of Michigan fellowship. I followed the Wolverines then and have done so faithfully since. I find it very painful to see the Wolverines deteriorate to this extent. I thought that the losses to Appalachia State and Toledo were awful aberrations. But now the winningest football team is in a sorry shape. Other good teams have also seen bad times. The challenge is to get out of it. And it is for the coach to motivate himself and his players and make the necessary adjustments. Thanks. Azhar Ali Khan, ottawa, Canada

University officials have learned that in the Big 10, you can't apply a "quick fix" as they tried to do when the present coach was hired. You got to go out and recruit athletes who know how to block and tackle.

After the first month of the season I was so giddy that I put my analytical mind aside and started to believe the nightmare that started in December 2007 was over. The losses to MSU and Iowa did not need to happen, but I still had faith in this team. But the last few games have me back to believing this is the wrong person and system for this conference. I was going to let Rich Rod off the hook, but I may simply be adding more "firsts" and "last times" to http://www.pocketpigskin.com/richroddisaster.html.

I have loved Michigan football since I was a child, and am an alumnus of this great university. We have had mediocre (8-4 record) teams in the past, but something about this "era" makes it really hard to invest my Saturday watching the game. There is not much to cheer about, and my wife does not like my bad mood for the rest of the weekend. I can only hope that Rich Rod can turn things around (we thought that we had done that in September), otherwise Michigan football will be re-rebuilding for many years to come.

Go Blue!

I'm frusterated that even scUM fans loose the ability to know Anglish language.

I'm not really sure how much of an impact having a different coach would have made these past two years. If you look at our current defensive guys and when they were recruited, we have four left from 2005 to now, Warren being the only one doing his job. Most of these left before Rich Rod was hired. Lloyd Carr was many things, but it's pretty evident he didn't do his job in the recruiting department in his final seasons, especially on defense.

Besides the goal line fail (which should NOT have come down to that...Roundtree should know how to get in the damn end zone with a breakaway), the playcalling was fine. They Lloydballed the run game and it was working. Execution mistakes by the players killed most of the offensive drives, plus muffed punts and whatnot. Coaching or not, CATCH THE DAMN BALL. The first few games proved that our players can go out and get the job done, but they're just making mistakes they weren't making before. The Notre Dame game showed that we have the talent and ability to beat almost anyone; our players just have to get their heads out of their asses (coughMikeWilliamscough).

Anyways, our skill position players who are redshirting this year are probably going to end up taking starting positions next year (Gallon and Turner especially). Firing Rich Rod is not the solution and never will be for years...changing coaches again would be a major Michigan State move.

It's not coaching when players drop punt returns and fumble the ball... But whatever...

Look at the experience on the team. We a starting walk-on at safety. No offense to him, but at a school like UM, that's just sad.

Lloyd left the cupboard dry when he retired. We've got 2 true freshman rotating the QB position as well.

Andy,

I am a Michigan Alumni (class of 69) who was a freshman roommate of Dave Fisher when he played fullback for Michigan. I must say in all these years through Bump Elliott, Bo Schembechler, Gary Moeller and even LLloyd Carr, I have never seen anything quite as bad as the Rodriguez era. When Ellott lost to Ohio State he went in and quit. I do not think Rodriguez fully comprehends he is a the U of Michigan not West Virginia , or some call it Hillbilly U. I think the Board of Regents and the President of Michigan should cut their losses and fire Rodriguez at the end of the year. It really is embarrassing to the University.

Andy, I agree completely. I graduated in 1971; Bo arrived in my junior year. I try to explain to my younger alumni friends here in southern California that even in the terrible 1967 season (my freshman year), things didn't seem as hopeless as they have the past two years. My best friend in Ann Arbor graduated in 1973 and lives in Marin County. He is still trying to persuade me that it will work out, have patience, blah blah blah. My patience is all gone! At least I was able to attend the 1998 Rose Bowl and experience a national championship!

Although your personal experience here is much appreciated, you are referring to the 1967 season as "the worst," when 1962-1963 saw a combined 5-11 record. Yes our team isn't that good right now. Michigan has had a period of unparalleled success. The last few years have been a rough transition, but we have been here before. Have a little patience and realize that with the personnel we have anyone would have problems.

It is not a lack of talent, but a lack of coaching if by this point in the season the players don't know what is going on. The team did seem to give up. Maybe there have been too many off-field distractions this year, but most of those have been self-induced, so we get back to coaching.....

I'm so mad, embarassed, and frusterated I don't even know what to say...things early on seemed like they might turn the corner. Two tough losses in the rain to State and Iowa I can accept, barely, but the last two games have been pathetic. It makes me long for what could have been had Carr stuck around with Ryan Mallet throwing bullets down field.

I don't want to loose faith, but with Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio State coming up it is hard to keep my head high.

At this point, it all comes down to whether or not you feel Rich Rod can turn the corner next year. Even if he was to be replaced, whomever took his place would be starting with a much different base set of athletes...here's to hoping Rich Rod can turn the corner.

I am part of a family of five generations of Michigan faithful. I have never been so upset in my nearly 58 years after watching my team play Saturday. From Ray Roundtree not running hard to finish what would likely have been a game clinching touchdown, to one collapse after another, what we really witnessed was a team-wide mental failing.

Since Fielding Yost was the first person to utter the now cliched concept that coached and played properly, football builds character, character has been the hallmark of Michigan football. In good times and bad, and I am old enough to rememebr some of the bad, I was always proud of my team. They always played hard, to the whistle for 60 minutes. Every man in every play. But what we saw Saturday was quite the opposite. Some players quit. Effort was lacking. They merely accepted their fate and played like they were Detroit Lions instead of Michigan Wolverines. They played without character. For the first time in my 58 years, I was embarassed.

And while Rich Rod may be a great strategic coach, I am not convinced that he understands character in the way we at Michigan see it. If the coaching leadership to build charater isn't on this staff, then they need to go. We are about more than just wins or losses. We are about a legacy. We'll see what they bring to the field Saturday and learn much more about how they understand (or don't) Michigan's character.

I love my alma mater but I am more embarassed this year than last by the pathetic performance of the football team. This year the talent is there - the coaching still is not. The Illinois game showed just how poorly coached these talented players are. Bill Martin ought to take Rich Rod with him when he leaves. Good riddance to both.
