The problem here was that the original legislation was based only on a skills test. It didn't have a basis in financial need. I have much more of a problem with cutting the scholarship for those that have a need for the money than for those who can pay tuition without the scholarship. Perhaps a better compromise would have been to modify the program to add a need based test for recipients.

Maybe we need a petition drive to force a referendum vote to raise taxes to produce a level of revenue required to run a state.

Good Article. I hope they keep the aid!

I read a really good write up of the financial system on this blog the other day. I suggest you read and comment!

Go blue.

A lot of families, like mine, are counting on that money to help pay for next year. The students earned it and it's not fair to retract the program for those who have already qualified.

I don't know what there is to complain about. Out of state student tuition is $35000 and there is rarely any scholarships available unless it is an athletic scholarship. Now that's a strain except on the rich.

tuition is 43,000 ... not 35

Your comment is one of short term memory lose and jealousy.

Out of State applicants know full well the cost of coming to Michigan and the tuition cited is the fee associated with that choice. The choice of an institution by all applicants is made knowing the financial cost to them when attending the University and receiving its privileged education. The fact that it is different for out of staters than for in staters has no relation to this article.

But why bang on those applicants who are upset because they made their choice under conditions that have now changed. They have a right to voice their frustrations, just as if an out of stater would have the right to voice their disapproval if tuition went up midterm.

The original story said $140,000. The story has been edited without acknowledging that fact.

It's $140 Million

$140,000 distributed to 96,000 students? That comes out to about $1.50 per student. Some scholarship.
