The other day as I talked with a friend I recalled a story Replica Zodiac ecommerce that I heard this summer. When did obtaining a credit card become an inalienable right? I would agree that credit cards are highly useful and certainly convenient, but they are not a mandatory piece of equipment for every citizen to carry in his wallet. This is just another attempt by the government to regulate common sense into people who aren't equipped to deal with the financial realities of having a credit card, and a bassackward attempt to make the banks and other credit card providers give out more credit to people who should be spending cash or food stamps instead.

This is not convincing in the least. It's more of the usual Daily line of granting students all the rights without any concern for consequences or responsibility. Some of the previous letters make this point. Is it independence to drink yourself into oblivion over weekends on a regular basis? There are sure a lot of times when I would like to do so, but I look ahead (or behind) and see the potential and likely problems involved. I also buy a lot of things I need beyond survival, especially music and books, but I usually am able to stop when the costs go beyond my income and hopefully will continue to be able to do so.

If this legislation created special credit protections for 18-20 year olds – who aren't always, or in all respects, consenting adults in every jurisdiction across the nation – such a law (though maternalistic) would be defensible. But this law creates obstacles intended to discourage emancipated adults – folks in their mid-20's – from obtaining a credit card. Legislation blocking select adults from accessing certain basic financial services would arguably run afoul of the Constitution’s Equal Protections clause.

Even if constitutional, the law goes too far. But legislative & executive overreaching seems to be a particular specialty of the Democratic Congress & Obama White House. Bureaucrats know what's best for you (a la Mary Sue's campus smoking ban), & whether you 'like it' or not is (at best) an amusing nullity to those wielding the levers of power within the expanding nanny state.

Tough issue. On the one hand I'm pretty wary of laws that treat young adults differently that old adults, pretty ageist. On the other hand maybe the government is treating college age adults like they're not responsible because...THEY'RE NOT RESPONSIBLE. Buying things you can't really afford is hardly an inalienable right.

It somewhat depends how hard the financial literacy class is. If it's a week long that's ridiculous. If it's a free 50 page study book and 30 minute exam that's not exactly asking a lot.

Uhhhh...

Why not mention another blatantly obvious reason for passing this law: kids stacking up huge, expensive loans during their 'college years,' not caring about when/how to pay them off - instead deferring thinking about it until that magical time called the 'future.'

If you really think the gov't should coddle college kids, then what about helping all those kids that took out excessive loans to be able to decorate their dorm room with a new PS3 or Xbox. That would be an even more realistic and true-to-life introduction to the real world.

Well don't feel so bad - the federal government thinks women are akin to children too. They provide special financial and other assistance to women, prosecute them less often and less vigorously, give them lighter sentences for the same crimes when they are convicted, more services to help them through life, affirmative action, etc. And they provide women all these goodies mainly because the politicians and bureaucrats believe that women are weaker, less mature and responsible, and generally less capable than men and thus need these privileges and perks in order to be 'equal.' In the meantime, women keep voting into office the very people who infantalize them. Just like college students.

Like I said, you're not alone kids.
