Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson reflects on his time at the Daily

By: Gary Graca

This week, those are us at the Daily are lucky enough to be visited by Washington Post columnist and last year's Pulitzer Prize winner in commentary Eugene Robinson. In 1974, Robinson was the co-editor in chief of the Daily along with Chris Parks.

He is in town along with Jonathan Miller and Rolfe Tessem — accomplished journalists in their own right and friends of Robinson's from Daily past — to talk to staffers about journalism and work with them on stories. Often accomplished journalists who cut their teeth at the Daily return to serve as our surrogate journalism advisers, since we don't employ them at the Daily nor does the University offer a journalism program where we could get that advise.

As part of his visit, though, Robinson participated in a video series being organized in which past accomplished alumni like Robinson, Daniel Okrent, Ann Marie Lipinski and countless others recount their stories about the Daily and what the experience meant to them.

Though I'm going to selfishly withhold the entire video until it is edited and produced completely, I wanted to share this clip. It's inspiring to say the least, if not a little too generous. And coming from the mouth of Robinson — someone impeccably skilled at the art of language — has that intangible quality that sends shivers down your spine.

(Special thanks to Steve Kagan for the video.)
