Teichert resigns as women’s golf coach

After 16 seasons, Michigan women's golf coach Kathy Teichert resigned on Thursday. She led the Wolverines to their only five NCAA Regional team appearances in the program's 33-year history, making her the most successful coach the program has ever had.
Teichert did not return The Daily’s phone calls to comment on the reasons behind her decision.
Since she replaced Sue LecLair in 1993, she has guided the Wolverines to 24 team titles and 19 individual championships.
Teichert also coached Michigan to 92 top-5 finishes in 185 events during her tenure. The highlight of her career at Michigan came during the 2001-02 season when her team won six of its 13 events and advanced to the NCAA Finals for the first and only time ever.
Although she is credited with improving a program that had never been relevant, her teams have enjoyed less success in recent years. Michigan’s strokes per round average has increased steadily in each of the last five seasons, from 303 in 2004-05 to 311 in 2008-09.
Teichert played collegiate golf for Michigan State and began her coaching career with Western Kentucky in 1986, where she remained until taking the Michigan job in 1993.
The Wolverines have already begun a search for Teichert’s successor.
